1. EVALUATION METHODOLOGY USED TO MEASURE FUEL CONSUMPTION

With numerous variables at play, reliable measurement of fuel consumption in the real world is a highly complex function. Therefore accurate fuel measurement equipment and a ‘known’ vehicle in respect of mechanical condition and reliability using the same driver must be used.

The fuel used by the vehicles in the above Powerplus tests was monitored using a J.P.S. F.M.S. Mark 4 and FM Digibox specifically built and calibrated for diesel vehicle evaluation. It has a positive displacement flow accuracy of 0.5 to 0.0% of reading throughout its flow range.

Industry standard fuel economy monitoring equipment

This equipment is industry recognised and is used by organisations such as MIRA, MILLBROOK and motor manufacturers including DAF, SAAB, VOLVO and IVECO for their own evaluations. The equipment replaces the vehicle's fuel tank by utilising a self-contained reservoir that is installed into the engine supply and return fuel lines in the same way as the vehicle's normal fuel system.

The vehicle's fuel tank becomes the supply to the J.P.S. reservoir. The flow from the vehicle's fuel tank to the J.P.S. reservoir is controlled by a needle valve and float arrangement. After installation into the vehicle's fuel system the J.P.S. reservoir is charged with fuel until the needle valve cuts off. The readout is then zeroed and once the vehicle moves the meter is started and will only record fuel that is drawn from the vehicle's fuel tank into the J.P.S. reservoir when the needle valve opens as the level in the reservoir drops.

When the float closes the needle valve no further fuel flows through the meter and, therefore, the readout accurately records the fuel replenished. This obviously happens many times during the test and the counter accurately accumulates the total fuel used during the test.

At the commencement of each test the vehicle's odometer reading was recorded. At the end of each test run the odometer reading was recorded again. The difference between the two readings was calculated and recorded as the distance travelled for that particular journey. Using established formula the fuel consumption is calculated in litres/100 kms.

On the completion of the baseline exercise prior to the Powerplus unit being fitted the total distance of the journeys is totalled and using established formulae the overall fuel consumption is calculated and recorded in litres/100 km.

The Powerplus unit is then installed into the vehicle and the exercise is repeated to establish the improved fuel consumption.

2. EVALUATION METHODOLOGY USED TO MEASURE EMISSIONS

Emissions tests were carried out before and after Powerplus installation using approved UK MOT exhaust analysers.

Impressive results like the ones shown below are readily repeatable, and trials can be arranged for interested fleet operators subject to the following:

a) Trial vehicle must be in good serviceable condition, with documentation to demonstrate that the vehicle selected for the trials has a sound service history. (Ideally, records should be available to prove that fuel economy, and where applicable MOT emissions tests, have been accurately monitored throughout the vehicle’s life, so that ongoing evaluation of fuel economy and emissions can be undertaken).

b) There is a negotiated contractual agreement to purchase a minimum number of units after a successful evaluation.
